GlobaLinks Learning Abroad
University of Waikato

Overview

The University of Waikato offers excellence in teaching and research. The University's qualifications are recognized internationally, its global connections are extensive, and its student profile is diverse. The University has a distinctive New Zealand character derived from the region. Waikato is a Mäori name meaning "flowing water", a name shared with New Zealand's longest river and our home province. At Waikato, students can combine major and supporting subjects from over 3,000 courses, providing a sound basis for future employment or further study.

Location

Established in 1964, the University is spread over a beautifully landscaped 68-hectare campus, a short distance from the center of Hamilton. Hamilton is New Zealand's fourth largest city located in the North Island, 90 minutes drive south of Auckland. It has a population of 130,000 people and is central to many of New Zealand's most popular tourist attractions and outdoor activities including surfing, skiing, whitewater rafting, hiking, caving, climbing, and kayaking to name a few. Scenic river walks, numerous parks and gardens, and a growing café and restaurant culture enable students to enjoy a relaxed yet cosmopolitan environment with a lower cost of living than many other New Zealand cities.

Academic Highlights

In the nationwide research rankings completed in 2007, Waikato ranked #1 in New Zealand in: accounting and finance; chemistry; communication and media studies; computer science, information technology and information sciences; ecology, evolution and behavior; general business; human resources; industrial relations; international business; management; molecular, cellular and whole organisms biology; pure and applied mathematics; music, literary arts, and other arts.

International students are encouraged to take courses exploring New Zealand and Pacific society, in particular the colorful and fascinating local Mäori Culture.

Guaranteed Housing

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad students are guaranteed pre-arranged accommodation at Waikato. There are a variety of housing options available which you will apply for after acceptance. Options include pre-arranged accommodations with meals and housing arranged upon arrival by student.

Special Programs

The University of Waikato is located near many of New Zealand's leading adventure attractions and tourist destinations. On-campus clubs offer a range of excursions to areas and events of interest and regularly arrange day trips to various locations. Waikato International organizes trips to Auckland and to Mount Maunganui Beach, one of New Zealand's most popular beaches.

Students who come to Waikato during the July-November semester regularly join the Uni Ski-Snowboard club which owns its own on-slope accommodation at Whakapapa – New Zealand's largest ski area.

Scholarships Available
In addition to the scholarships offered by GlobaLinks Learning Abroad, University of Waikato supports GlobaLinks students with two $300NZD awards each year.

About GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Programs

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad programs are created with individual student's goals in mind. Our programs are built around a unique Discovery Model which is delivered by our amazing staff, both in the U.S. and overseas. Our Discovery Model provides every student with an individualized experience through discovery in 5 key areas: personal, academic, cultural, social, and professional. Our North American staff counsels each student through the application and enrollment process, and our on-site Resident Coordinators set up a calendar of activities for students related to each area of discovery. These activities are more than just tourist excursions, and include opportunities like networking events, local festivals, gallery openings, and other similar events that you can't find in a travel book.

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad programs in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji include everything you would expect in a study abroad program: guaranteed housing, 24-hour in-country support, an in-country multi-day orientation program, comprehensive pre-departure services, excursions, and discovery activities to make the most out of each student's experience. Students of all majors are welcome to apply and scholarships are available.
