Overview
The University of Salamanca, founded by Alfonso IX of Leon in 1218, is the oldest in Spain and one of the oldest in the world. It was at the forefront of the Spanish Renaissance, served as a bridge to Latin America, and later became a model for many universities in the New World. Some of the most renowned Spanish writers and intellectuals were educated in its halls. The University of Salamanca continues this tradition of excellence to this day with a highly distinguished faculty doing research in 53 departments.
The university's 30,000 Spanish students have the opportunity to receive degrees in 58 different areas of specialty. In addition, 7,000 foreign students from all over the world take language and culture classes through Cursos Internacionales, the University Department that organizes these long tradition programs for international students.
Academic Highlights
Students with beginning level of Spanish only take language related courses. Students with intermediate and above level of Spanish may take courses on culture, history, gender studies, cinema, art, applied language, literature, and Middle Eastern studies. All students choose courses for a total of 80-100 hours.
Location
Salamanca, a small city of 165,000 inhabitants, is home of some of the most impressive architecture in Spain, and yet it remains a lively and dynamic community. The city is characterized by its unique yellow stone facades which fill the streets with color and light. The diverse architectural styles of its cloisters, churches, and Renaissance palaces blend together in the streets and plazas of the old town. The striking engravings which characterize the Romanesque and Gothic cathedrals, the House of Shells, and the facade of the university, all reflect Salamanca's historical importance, proving it worthy of its prestigious title given by UNESCO as a "Mankind Heritage Monument".
Housing
Students may choose from 3 different housing options: homestay, shared apartment, or an off-campus student residence.
About GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Programs
GlobaLinks Learning Abroad programs are created with individual student's goals in mind. Our programs are built around a unique Discovery Model which is delivered by our amazing staff, both in the U.S. and overseas. Our Discovery Model provides every student with an individualized experience through discovery in 5 key areas: personal, academic, cultural, social, and professional. Our North American staff counsels each student through the application and enrollment process, and our on-site Resident Coordinators set up a calendar of activities for students related to each area of discovery. These activities are more than just tourist excursions, and include opportunities like networking events, local festivals, gallery openings, and other similar events that you can't find in a travel book.
GlobaLinks Learning Abroad programs include everything you would expect in a study abroad program: guaranteed housing, 24-hour in-country support, comprehensive pre-departure services, excursions, and discovery activities to make the most out of each student's experience.
