University of Otago
Overview
The University of Otago, established in 1869, is New Zealand’s oldest university. Otago is ranked in the Top 130 universities in the world by the 2011 QS Ranking of World Universities and has been ranked as New Zealand’s top university for research quality and intensity. The university has collaboration and student exchange agreements with over 90 institutions worldwide.
Dunedin is the compact city in which the University of Otago is located, a city which is very unique within Australasia in that the university is intrinsically linked with the cities identity and economy, more than one sixth of the city’s population are university students and the campus is located just a few blocks from the city center and student housing. Otago is renowned for its close-knit student community and vibrant campus lifestyle. The vast majority of students live in houses or apartments within the main student neighborhoods, all of which are within 15 minutes’ walk of the campus and key facilities, including Dunedin’s newly completed 30,000 seat covered stadium and adjoining university gym.
The University takes its name from the province, Otago, of which Dunedin is its principal city. Dunedin (population 120,000) offers students the best of both worlds. It has all the facilities, entertainment and variety of larger cities, but is small enough to be friendly, intimate, and uncrowded. Dunedin is also an excellent gateway to Central Otago and Fiordland where opportunities abound for hiking, skiing, water sports, adventure tourism (including bungy-jumping), or admiring the spectacular landscapes.
Location
The University of Otago is located in the southernmost of New Zealand's main centers, in the province of Otago. Dunedin is a gateway to Central Otago and Fiordland where opportunities abound for hiking, skiing, water sports, adventure tourism (including bungee jumping), or, just admiring the spectacular landscape.

Special Programs
Situated in close proximity to various wildlife, ecological, marine, and geological research environments, the departments across Otago's Division of Sciences make the most of the huge natural laboratory on their doorstep. New Zealand-specific content and exploratory field trips are common components to many science courses in, for example, botany, ecology, geography, geology, and marine science.
Otago offers many courses which provide the opportunity learn about and engage with the culture and language of the indigenous peoples of New Zealand and Polynesia.
Students are able to focus on the Maori culture and/or the culture of the Pacific Islands.
Otago's School of Business offers more than 250 courses which cover a diverse range of topics from those with a global perspective to those with a distinctly New Zealand flavor. Consider the 'New Zealand Wine Business and Tourism' course and those focusing on ecotourism operations, environmental economics, and event and convention management.
About GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Programs
GlobaLinks Learning Abroad programs are created with individual student's goals in mind. Our programs are built around a unique Discovery Model which is delivered by our amazing staff, both in the U.S. and overseas. Our Discovery Model provides every student with an individualized experience through discovery in 5 key areas: personal, academic, cultural, social, and professional. Our North American staff counsels each student through the application and enrollment process, and our on-site Resident Coordinators set up a calendar of activities for students related to each area of discovery. These activities are more than just tourist excursions, and include opportunities like networking events, local festivals, gallery openings, and other similar events that you can't find in a travel book.
GlobaLinks Learning Abroad programs include everything you would expect in a study abroad program: guaranteed housing, 24-hour in-country support, an in-country multi-day orientation program, comprehensive pre-departure services, excursions, and discovery activities to make the most out of each student's experience. Students of all majors are welcome to apply and scholarships are available.
In addition to our multi-day Bridging Cultures Orientation Program, GlobaLinks Learning Abroad includes excursions in our Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji semester/year abroad programs. Each participant can choose one of the following four exciting excursions: Legian Beach in Bali, Queenstown and Milford sound in New Zealand, a Fiji island resort, or the Whitsundays in Australia! All tour costs are included, and all you have to do is get yourself to the departure point.
