Overview
The first students attended what is now known as The University of Limerick in 1972. The University was granted full university powers by legislation enacted by the Irish Parliament in 1989. It is the first new University established since the foundation of the State. There are 11,500 students at UL, and approximately 1,000 of those are international students. There are 70 different clubs and societies on campus that involve anything from the Laughing Society to the Outdoor Pursuits Club and International Society. There is an Olympic sized swimming pool, exercise classes, a cardio room and many other available services in the University Arena. Membership is included in EuroLearn program fees.
Academic Highlights
The University is composed of four constituent Faculties: the Kemmy Business School, the Faculty of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences, the Faculty of Education & Health Sciences and the Faculty of Science and Engineering. UL is also home to the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance. GlobaLinks Learning Abroad students are allowed to sit in on classes for two weeks prior to registering in order to decide which classes they prefer. The Rugby Study Abroad Program offers male and female rugby players of all levels the opportunity to undertake their academic studies at UL whilst being an active member of UL Bohemian Rugby Football Club.
Location
The University is located in Castletroy, in the heart of the 650-acre National Technological Park, 3 miles above the Viking city of Limerick in Ireland. Limerick City is the third largest city in the Republic of Ireland. It was founded by the Vikings over a thousand years ago. Its (population 80,000) is a most lively, interesting and attractive place to live and study. The city is magnificently sited on one of Europe's finest rivers, the Shannon. The proximity of Shannon International Airport (12.5 miles) to the University cements Limerick as a gateway to Europe.
Housing
GlobaLinks Learning Abroad students enrolled in UL may choose to live on-campus in one of the five Student Villages. There are approximately 2,500 rooms available on campus managed by Plassey Campus Centre Ltd. Students also have the possibility of living off campus in shared accommodation that includes self-catering houses and apartments. Most off-campus accommodation is located within walking distance of the University Campus.
About GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Programs
GlobaLinks Learning Abroad programs are created with individual student's goals in mind. Our programs are built around a unique Discovery Model which is delivered by our amazing staff, both in the U.S. and overseas. Our Discovery Model provides every student with an individualized experience through discovery in 5 key areas: personal, academic, cultural, social, and professional. Our North American staff counsels each student through the application and enrollment process, and our on-site Resident Coordinators set up a calendar of activities for students related to each area of discovery. These activities are more than just tourist excursions, and include opportunities like networking events, local festivals, gallery openings, and other similar events that you can't find in a travel book.
GlobaLinks Learning Abroad programs include everything you would expect in a study abroad program: guaranteed housing, 24-hour in-country support, an in-country multi-day orientation program, comprehensive pre-departure services, and discovery activities to make the most out of each student's experience. Students of all majors are welcome to apply, and no prior language skill is required even for foreign-speaking destinations as some or all courses are taught in English at each university. Scholarships are available.
