Overview

Lancaster University is a vibrant and friendly, self contained campus university which is committed to achieving the highest standards.  With its Residential College structure and high quality teaching departments, it places great emphasis on the student experience.  Lancaster is among the top 200 universities in the world according to the Times World University rankings and 19 in the UK in the Times Good University Guide 2010.

The campus has a reputation for being one of the safest in the UK and has its own thriving community based around eight Residential Colleges which helps both home and international students settle into university life quickly.  The campus has invested over £300 million over the last 6 years to improve student facilities, teaching space, and accommodation.

Academic Highlights

The University is well known for the quality of its work in Management (which is AACSB accredited) and Environment Science.  Many pre-med students have studied at Lancaster in the departments of biological sciences, physics, math and biomedicine. English literature, history, politics, and international relations, European studies, psychology, and creative writing are all popular options for study abroad students.  A major new development is the Lancaster Institute for Contemporary Arts (LICA) which comprises the departments of music, theater and art.  Students can also undertake an undergraduate research project supervised by a faculty member which can assist in preparations for a senior year dissertation.

Location

The University is located in the northwest of England, close to the beautiful Lake District, one of England's national parks.  It has good rail links to London (2.5 hours), Edinburgh (2 hours) and Manchester (one hour), as well as 3 airports within 1.5 hours, which give easy access to mainland Europe.  Students are never far away from both spectacular countryside and city life.

The student-friendly town of Lancaster is 15 minutes from campus by bus and has plenty to offer in the way of entertainment including an independent cinema and theater, pubs, restaurants, several nightclubs, and museums.

Housing

The eight undergraduate Residential Colleges at Lancaster are at the center of student life.  Each college provides social and study facilities, practical support, and information as well as accommodation.  You will be housed in a single study bedroom, the majority of which have private shower rooms. Each bedroom has wired internet access and a telephone.

Accommodation is self catering, and you will have access to a well-equipped kitchen.  If you don't want to cook, there are many places to eat on campus including coffee shops and takeaways as well as two grocery stores.

About GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Programs

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad programs are created with individual student's goals in mind. Our programs are built around a unique Discovery Model which is delivered by our amazing staff, both in the U.S. and overseas. Our Discovery Model provides every student with an individualized experience through discovery in 5 key areas: personal, academic, cultural, social, and professional. Our North American staff counsels each student through the application and enrollment process, and our on-site Resident Coordinators set up a calendar of activities for students related to each area of discovery. These activities are more than just tourist excursions, and include opportunities like networking events, local festivals, gallery openings, and other similar events that you can't find in a travel book.

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad programs in Europe include everything you would expect in a study abroad program: guaranteed housing, 24-hour in-country support, an in-country multi-day orientation program, comprehensive pre-departure services and discovery activities to make the most out of each student's experience. Students of all majors are welcome to apply, and no prior language skill is required even for foreign-speaking destinations as some or all courses are taught in English at each university. Scholarships are available.
