Kingston University Summer School

 Program HighlightsCentral London

  • Let London be your classroom: Kingston's unique subject offerings emphasize experiential learning
  • Study your subject area from a British perspective and earn up to 6 credits during the summer
  • Take advantage of Kingston's great location and explore London, the UK, and mainland Europe on the weekends

Who Should Apply

Open to students of all majors who have completed at least one semester of university study at time of participation. May be of particular interest to students majoring in fields such as creative writing, English literature, history, international business and finance, art history and architecture, theater studies, and fine arts.

Program Overview

Kingston University's Summer School is an exciting opportunity to take classes and explore British culture in four weeks. Numerous classes are available and all have a particular focus on England, London, or Britain, allowing you to study the local culture in class as well as experience all that it has to offer outside the classroom. There will be two, optional four-day weekend excursions (additional fee) organized by the University. These excursions allow students to travel to mainland Europe, Ireland, or elsewhere in the UK through an organized group itinerary. Past trips have included France and Scotland. The other two weekends provide free time for exploring London and the nearby area.

Location

Kingston University London is located in the historic market town of Kingston upon Thames, a Royal Borough within greater London. Students can access the attractions of the capital very easily (25 minutes by train), but escape its hustle and bustle to live in the leafy suburbs with easy access to parks and outdoor activities. Traditional pubs, trendy cafes, restaurants, gyms, a 14-screen cinema, 16-lane bowling alley, a fantastic array of shops including a large indoor mall featuring the UK's top retailers make the Kingston area particularly appealing to students.

Academic Information

Students enroll in two classes, worth 3 U.S. semester credits each, during the 4-week term. Classes are open to all current university students and are specifically designed for the Summer School study experience. They aim to minimize the amount of time spent in a class room and maximize the amount of experiential learning in and around the London area.

Assessment may be based on portfolios or journals of on-going work, and student presentations. Essays on fieldtrips reflect the amount of studying undertaken outside the classroom. In-class tests and shorter essays are appropriate for the more intensive time-scale of summer school.

The following class offerings have been offered in the past:

  • British Art and Architecture
  • British Culture and Society
  • Creative Writing in London
  • Exploring Cultural London
  • Introduction to International Business
  • London: International Finance Centre
  • Live Theatre
  • London and its Literature
  • Multicultural London

  • Provision of Healthcare: The British Model
  • Shakespeare: Reading and Performance

About GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Programs

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad programs are created with individual student's goals in mind. Our programs are built around a unique Discovery Model which is delivered by our amazing staff, both in the U.S. and overseas. Our Discovery Model provides every student with an individualized experience through discovery in 5 key areas: personal, academic, cultural, social, and professional. Our North American staff counsels each student through the application and enrollment process, and our on-site Resident Coordinators set up a calendar of activities for students related to each area of discovery. These activities are more than just tourist excursions, and include opportunities like networking events, local festivals, gallery openings, and other similar events that you can't find in a travel book.

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad programs include everything you would expect in a study abroad program: guaranteed housing, 24-hour in-country support, comprehensive pre-departure services, and discovery activities to make the most out of each student's experience. Students of all majors are welcome to apply, and no prior language skill is required even for foreign-speaking destinations as some or all courses are taught in English at each university. Scholarships are available.
