Who Should Apply
Open to all students with an interest in photography who have completed at least one year of full-time university study. May be of particular interest to avid amateurs or those wanting to develop their photography skills.
Program Overview
In partnership with La Trobe University, GlobaLinks Learning Abroad offers a fascinating and rare opportunity to visit and photograph one of the most significant areas of Australia --the Outback. During this three-week course, you will see a part of the country rarely visited by students, tourists, and even Australians themselves, while exploring a regional Australian outback landscape through photography. Workshops and a five-day field trip provide the platform for exploration of imagery based on the region's ancient landscape and sociological layering created by pre- and post-colonial influences. A local Aboriginal guide will accompany the field trip to help transition students into the area's culture. Participants exhibit their work in a regional art gallery at the conclusion of the program. All photographic equipment is provided; however, students are welcome to bring their own cameras. Workshops are led by photography faculty from La Trobe University's School of Visual Arts.
Location
Often referred to as the "Mediterranean of the Outback", Mildura is known for its citrus groves, vineyards, tree-lined streets, and endless sunshine. The course will also spend two days in Melbourne, Australia exploring the sites of the city and includes an Australian football (footy) match.
Academic Information

Experts instruct and coach your skills in photography, black and white printing with alternative photographic practices, and keeping a journal

Workshops on SLR camera operation and maintenance, aperture and depth of field, shutter speed and movement, exposure control, film speed, and tripods

Welcome sessions from important community leaders and chances to talk with local professional photographers

Darkroom and computer lab work time

Five-day field trip to Mutawintji and Mungo national parks, as well as Broken Hill which includes short hikes to unique photo shoots and time within Aboriginal communities

A final exhibition of each student's best photographs held at a regional art gallery in Mildura at the end of the program
Assessment for this course is based on the submission of four assignments at the conclusion of the program: 1) daily travel journal; 2) black and white print portfolio; 3) color print portfolio; and 4) a web page documenting your experience of the program.
