Program Overview

University of Hong Kong offers a unique and well-structured, credit-bearing undergraduate program on Asian Studies. The program aims at enhancing participants' awareness of the importance of Asia in world affairs. In doing so, it seeks to create an interactive learning environment where international students of high academic caliber combine knowledge acquired from lectures and seminars with an understanding of real world problems.

Renowned businesspersons, community leaders, and scholars will contribute to the course as guest speakers. The abilities developed during this course will facilitate team building and public speaking skills, as well as creativity and resourcefulness through problem-solving and research. Instruction is in English.

Location

Being an international financial center with the world's freest economy, Hong Kong is Asia's most globally connected city. As one can imagine, business and commerce create a constant buzz in the city and the fast-paced pulse can be felt around the clock. The central business district makes up one of the world's most beautiful skylines, and with a closer look, one can see colonial buildings and modern architecture competing for space and attention. Hong Kong is a densely populated city, but with over 60% of the land left undeveloped, it offers a wide range of outlets for recreation, relaxation, and exploration in the great outdoors.

Academic Information

Through lectures/seminars, study tours, field trips, and group discussion you will cover some of these core topics:

  • Business and economic development in Asia
  • China and the world
  • Climate change in Asia
  • Culture and history of China
  • Democratization in Asia
  • Economics with Chinese characteristics
  • Human rights in Asia
  • Popular culture in Asia
  • Social and political development in China
  • The United States and Asia

Each student will develop an individual research project, the final product of which will be an assessed essay (50%). Students will also write an essay (40%) based on topics from a Q&A session during the program. The initial essay (40%) and the final project (50%), along with an attendance grade (10%) will form the basis for evaluating individual student performances.

About GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Programs

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad programs are created with individual student's goals in mind. Our programs are built around a unique Discovery Model which is delivered by our amazing staff, both in the U.S. and overseas. Our Discovery Model provides every student with an individualized experience through discovery in 5 key areas: personal, academic, cultural, social, and professional. Our North American staff counsels each student through the application and enrollment process, and our on-site Resident Coordinators set up a calendar of activities for students related to each area of discovery. These activities are more than just tourist excursions, and include opportunities like networking events, local festivals, gallery openings, and other similar events that you can't find in a travel book.

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad programs in Asia include everything you would expect in a study abroad program: guaranteed housing, 24-hour in-country support, an in-country multi-day orientation program, comprehensive pre-departure services, excursions, and discovery activities to make the most out of each student's experience. Students of all majors are welcome to apply, and no prior language skill is required as some or all courses are taught in English at each university. Scholarships are available.
